Upon withdrawing from school, Nate is seen by Rue and Jules, who then enter into a conversation where Jules asks Rue to stay quiet about her hook up with Cal. He tells Nate to keep his head held high and not to pay attention to the people around him as he is marched out of school and into the local police station. Cal, meanwhile, is told to speak to his son before doing anything else. Sonia Perez, Maddy's mother, decides to press charges against Nate, much to the horror of her daughter. Trevor invites her to hang out, but Kat is still angry about Ethan. At the mall, Kat bumps into Trevor, the store clerk she had fantasized about. On the night of the carnival, Kat had an epiphany about men, prompting her confidence to sky-rocket. He proceeds to quiz various kids around campus on the events of the carnival before calling Nate (and Cal) into the office. Maddy doesn't admit anything, but Principal Hayes is determined. Given her molly incident at the carnival and inability to eat thanks to her comedown, she is called into the Principal's office, where she is asked if Nate is responsible for her bruising. Unable to hide the raw red marks across her neck, Maddy's abuse is discovered at school when she passes out in class due to her rough weekend. Things appear to be on the up for Rue with her mom, and their relationship is finally beginning to rekindle without the wall of drugs between them. As she begins to pleasure herself, Leslie bursts into her room, causing a slightly awkward and strangely humorous exchange between the two. Rue is missing drugs, but she decides to focus on Jules instead, almost obsessively. But no matter what Nate did, Maddy would still love him. However, things soon became toxic, so toxic to the point where he had choked her at the carnival when she asked him about the photos on his phone. He was a gentleman, and she liked to make him feel good in bed. At first, their relationship was loving and sweet. Maddy liked Nate before he asked her out. She participated in beauty pageants, and her confidence could have led her to win Miss Universe if it had not been for a beauty coach who was arrested for molesting young girls. She did not know why, but it was something that gave her great confidence. In her childhood, Maddy felt that everyone loved her. Cal worries about how his actions have affected his sons. Cassie tries to distance herself from Daniel and focus on her relationship with McKay. Kat ignores a confused Ethan and embraces her new lifestyle. Jules begins to feel pressured by her role in Rue's sobriety. In the aftermath of the carnival, Maddy and Nate are forced to deal with a police investigation.
